Nothing. Being cheap is just an insult (read: I have to give this to you because I feel obligated). If you never give anything, then your employees don't expect it.

Question: Is it better to be cheap (like the $50 you mentioned for Matt) or just give nothing?

To comment on the first part of your post, I believe company loyalty is a thing of the past. I tell everyone I know to keep looking for bigger and better opportunities and forget about what your employer might say if you up and quit. If they don't treat you right and all they care about is their bottom line, show them the same respect by always looking for something better.

My wife had a job where they could care less about their employees. Her super always made her feel guilty for using a sick day or wanting time off, but by golly, if the company needed something, you better give it something.

People don't stick around with companies anymore because companies don't stick to their employees. Benefits are getting worse all to save the company a few bucks. It's unfortunate, but you really do have to look out for old number one, cause the company isn't going to look after you anymore.
